The Spirit of Honor
Honor runs deeper than just talk. Genuine honor can be heard in our speech but it originates much deeper than that. Honor originates in the heart. This has an important application in the marketplace. I firm understanding of this principle will help us to develop a spirit of Honor.
If honor doesn’t originate in our heart it simply is manipulation.
"The Lord says: 'These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.’ "
There is a spirit of Honor, which is an attitude that accompanies our word. This is something I experience all the time in business. I am a contractor, that means we have a contract with an owner in writing and it’s our job to execute the contract. We can miss it when we don’t honor the spirit of the contract. The spirit of the contract is that I have a fiduciary responsibility to do what is in their best interest.
One of the ways that we honor them is to understand the spirit behind the contract and what we are trying to do for them.
It’s more than what is said and what is written. There is a spirit of honor. Honor the spirit in which a contract is agreed upon. Make your word valuable. Honor is more than just lip-service. We shouldn’t do it with God and we shouldn’t do it with people.
There is no such thing as fake honor.
True honor starts in the heart. That is why it needs to be a core value or it can easily masquerade as manipulation. This behavior resembles dishonor.
Dishonor blocks the power of God in our lives.
In Mark 6 the effects of dishonor can be seen:
"... “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his hometown and among his relatives and by his own family.” And because of their unbelief he couldn’t do any mighty miracles among them ..."
Our hearts and words must line up if we are to experience the power of God in our lives. This means that honor needs to be displayed in our actions and motivations. An attitude of honor backs up our word.
