How to Guard Your Heart: Guard Your Gates

There has never been a time in history when we have had so much access to content at the tip of our fingers. Movies, tv shows, music, podcasts, social media – you name it!

What do you consume on a regular basis? Is it improving your mind and character?

What we meditate on or consume daily will be what we produce in our words and actions. Our EYES and EARS are GATES into our soul, mind, and heart; so, we must be extremely careful to protect them.

What we listen to can be a constructive or a destructive force. Music can be a powerful weapon that can regulate the atmosphere. There is music that is inconsistent with what we believe. If we consume that on a consistent basis, it will show up in our hearts.

In Matthew 12:34-35 (NIV) it says, “…For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”

Basically, garbage IN, garbage OUT.

The same goes for what we watch on television. In 2020 I made the decision to stop watching the news. I noticed the more I watched, the more it instilled fear into my heart.

Matthew 6:22 (MSG) says, “Your eyes are windows into your body…”

I rarely watch movies or tv that is live anymore. It seems impossible to watch something that doesn’t contain sexual content. Instead, I record shows or watch a movie on demand so I can fast forward through those scenes. If I allow myself to watch content like that, those images will imprint on my mind and heart.

It’s OUR RESPONSIBILITY to be conscious and aware of what we allow into our hearts.

What barriers or boundaries do you need to set for yourself?

I challenge you this week to check your GATES. Be intentional to guard them according to how God wants you.
