The value of advice cannot be understated as an entrepreneur and leader. Running a business means making decisions, sometimes lots of them simultaneously. We can get stuck when we don’t know what to do, this experience has been called by some as: “Paralysis by analysis.” It’s the stationary feeling of not knowing how to move forward or accurately balance the risks and rewards. In times like this, I found a wonderful relief. It is the power of advice from trusted advisors and counselors. I believe that having this extra level of protection taps into the powerful principle of unity.
Psalm 133 in the bible teaches us that Unity unlocks the blessing of God. That power of unity can be observed in so many different places in life. I am always shocked at how unity and synergy in a team produce greater results than the sum of its parts. The benefits of unity are vital to the success of a team, whether it be in sports or in sales you will see it happen.
One of the mistakes I have made is to short-circuit this power of protection and unity. I have done this by making big decisions without looking for advice. The book of Proverbs makes it abundantly clear that having someone trusted to consult with is a benefit:
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.” -Proverbs 15:22 NIV
“Be sure you have sound advice before making plans… ” -Proverbs 20:18 CEV
“Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances. ” -Proverbs 11:14 MSG
There is pressure to believe that a good leader always knows what to do. The truth is that you might have great instincts, brilliant insight, and an uncanny ability to forecast; however, bringing in a trusted source of advice does not negate these abilities or take anything from them. Some of these talents may have got you to where you are today, but in order to Thrive, to grow, and to unlock a new level of blessing and protection I would like to advise you to find these valuable people.
I have also learned that not every advisor needs to be on my payroll. I have countless stories of how God has used prayerful people to confirm the next step for my business. God has used my wife more than anyone to help me make successful business decisions.
